Federalist Paper # 51

Questions:
  1. Do you think the people of the United States surrender too much power to the government?
  2. How does the structure of the government affect the check and balance system?
  3. How will the government go about protecting itself from possible encroachments?
  4. What checks do the American people have on the central government?
  5. How does the government reflect human nature?
Quotes:

"A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions." - I chose this quote because Madison highlights the importance of the structure of government as well as the importance of the people's involvement

"The interest of the man must be connected with the constitutional rights of the place. It may be a reflection on human nature that such devices should be necessary to control the abuses of government. What is government itself but the greatest of all reflections on human nature?" - I chose this quote because it shows how the Constitution isn't just a set of strict rules, but it also takes into account human nature.

"In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place, oblige it to control itself." -  I chose this quote because although the government is in place to protect the people, it must also control itself while doing so.

"Justice is the end of government. It is the end of civil society. It ever has been and ever will be pursued until it be obtained, or until liberty be lost in the pursuit." - I chose this quote because it accentuates the main goal of government, to pursue justice in society.

"The influence of factious leaders may kindle a flame within their particular States, but will be unable to spread a general conflagration through the other states."- I chose this quote because it shows the importance of a national government. You can have strong leadership at a state level, but in order for it to have effect it has to be done at the national level.

  1. Jeremy, In your first question you ask if the people surrender too much power to the government. In my opinion, I feel as if we do surrender too much power to the government, but it is necessary for us to do so. There are only a select amount of people who are elected into the government because we feel they can do whats best for the people. If we didn't give up our power to the government and tried to run in ourselves or all have a say in everything, it would just be a chaotic mess. I feel that giving our power to the government is needed for it to run smoothly.
